Essential Defensive Riding Techniques when renting a Motorcycle
As a fellow rider you already know that we have to be extra cautious when riding. Everyone has its own way of riding and every Country may have different rules and/or customs.
So, especially when you are riding abroad with a rental Motorcycle you need to increase your awareness and take extra caution.
When you are planning a motorcycle holiday, there are some essential items you’ll want to bring along to make the most of your trip. Here’s a list of tips from our personal experience:
- Stay Visible: Wear bright and reflective gear to increase your chances to be seen and keep your motorcycle’s headlights on, if the case use your high beams even in daylight to help.
- Positioning: Always choose the best lane position to maximize visibility and minimize blind spots. When possible avoid riding in the blind spots of other vehicles.
- Maintain a Safe Following Distance: Remember to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow for reaction time. Use the “two-second rule” as a guidance and increase it in adverse conditions.
- Be Predictable: Use turn signals (and remember to switch them off), use the brake lights to communicate your intentions and most of all avoid sudden maneuvers or lane changes.
- Scan the Road: Continuously scan the road ahead, checking for potential hazards and be aware of intersections, side streets, and driveways.
- Watch for Escape Routes: Always be aware of potential escape routes in case of an emergency and position yourself where you have the best chance to avoid a collision.
- Anticipate the Actions of Others: Predict the behavior of drivers around you by watching for signs of turning, slowing down, or erratic driving.
- Be Mindful of Road Conditions: Watch for slippery surfaces, gravel, or debris especially on country roads and adjust your speed accordingly, decrease it in adverse weather conditions.
- Use Your Mirrors: Regularly check your mirrors to be aware of the traffic behind you and always be cautious when changing lanes.
- Be Cautious at Intersections: Approach intersections with caution and be prepared for unexpected actions from other drivers. Look left, right, and left again before proceeding.
- Assume You’re Invisible: Don’t take it for granted that other drivers see you. Try to make eye contact with drivers whenever possible.
- Protective Gear: Wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves, jacket, pants, and boots.
- Stay Sober: Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Remember, defensive riding is about being proactive and prepared for potential risks. By consistently practicing these techniques, you can significantly enhance your safety on the road. Also remember to ride the first few miles in a way to learn your “new” rental motorcycle so to get the feeling of her handling, braking and overall dynamic behavior.
